A cup crafted from breath
Blowing is a technique in which molten glass is wrapped around the end of a long blowpipe, blown into, and shaped by rotating and rolling it. The name "marver glass" comes from this process. "Marver" refers to a flat plate used to shape molten glass by rolling it, and it is used in the first stage of blowing.
Therefore, no two cups are exactly alike. From the curve of the rim and the thick base remaining to the spots where air bubbles remain inside the glass, everything is a trace left by the artist's breath and hands.
Bubbles, time remaining in the glass
Marver glass derives its form from scenes of nature, such as water droplets, ripples on the water's surface, and moonlight glistening with sunlight. The bubbles inside the small glass resemble air bubbles submerged in water or dew drops on blades of grass in the early morning. When filled with clear liquor or water, the bubbles rise more distinctly, and when placed by a window, sunlight passes through the glass to create small water shadows on the table.
Try writing it like this
· A glass of traditional liquor — The thick bottom provides a stable grip, making it perfect for slowly savoring a glass of clear liquor.
· A small water cup for the tea ceremony — Keep a sip of clear water ready to rinse your mouth between cups of tea.
· A stem of flowers If you put a stem of a small wildflower picked on a walk into it, it becomes a small vase.
· Next to the lamp — of the same author glass lantern When placed side by side, the two glass pieces reflect each other's light.
Marberglas · Lee Seung-jeong
Artist Lee Seung-jung works primarily with the blowing technique, in which molten glass is directly shaped in a furnace at approximately 1200°C, exploring the physical properties and sculptural possibilities of glass. Drawing formal inspiration from natural scenes such as water droplets, ripples on water surfaces, stone towers, and moonlight shining with sunlight, she seeks to capture the movement and time of nature within the material of glass.
Usage and Management
· Hand wash with a soft sponge and neutral detergent, and wipe dry with a dry cloth before storing.
Please avoid beverages hotter than 80℃ and sudden temperature changes (such as immersing a hot glass in cold water).
· We do not recommend using a dishwasher, microwave, or oven.
Since this is hand-blown glass, the location, shape, and size of the air bubbles vary slightly from one to another. The small black dots inside the glass are also natural traces of the manufacturing process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Is the price based on one item?
A. Yes, 35,000 won is the price for one cup. If you would like to use two side by side, please select 2 for the quantity. Since each cup is hand-blown, the shapes and bubbles of the two cups differ slightly, so they look more natural when placed as a pair.
Q. Is it okay to put hot tea in it?
A. As this is thin glass made by blowing, it is susceptible to sudden temperature changes. Please avoid beverages hotter than 80°C and instead serve cooled tea or room-temperature or cold beverages.
Q. Will the cup be exactly the same as the picture?
A. The location and size of air bubbles inside the glass, the curve of the rim, and the thickness of the bottom vary slightly from cup to cup. The small black dots inside the glass are also natural marks from the manufacturing process and are not defects.
Q. Can I use a dishwasher or microwave?
A. Not recommended. Please hand wash with a soft sponge and neutral detergent, and wipe dry with a dry cloth before storing.
Q. Can I see this in the store?
A. You can view and select the Marver Glass Lantern in person at Composition, a lifestyle select shop in Sinchon-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju. Stock availability may vary depending on the season.
